Getting the fresh off - Ransom

Thoroughbreds challenge horsemanship in the best possible way. Of the five pillars of horsemanship, getting the fresh off is our top priority—especially with Thoroughbreds coming straight off the track. Racetracks are designed to build speed, fitness, and forward drive, not mental regulation or emotional control. That doesn’t make these horses “difficult”—it makes them an incredible opportunity for thoughtful training, growth, and partnership. In this video, we break down how and why getting the fresh off matters, and how it sets the foundation for a quiet mind, a willing body, and long-term soundness—both mentally and physically.

The 5 Pillars of Horsemanship (adapted from B1 Horsemanship)

1. Start quiet, end quiet

2. Get the fresh off

3. Find the resistance

4. Be willing to compromise

5. Always quit on the try

When you honor these principles, Thoroughbreds stop being a challenge to manage—and start becoming partners you can trust.
